Decreased Sound Tolerance

Hyperacusis:

Person reacts negatively to all louder sounds. It is the physical characteristics of the sound (i.e. intensity) that greatly bothers a person. Treatment involves desensitization using sound generators (SG). Also very important for the patient to understand the brain model involving auditory cortex, limbic system and autonomic nervous system (ANS).

Misophonia:

Person reacts negatively to specific patterns and meaning and specific sounds. Reaction depends on person’s psychological profile, and the context in which sound is presented. Examples of sounds that elicit a negative reaction can be breathing, chewing and tapping sounds. Treatment can involve use of SG. Counseling and education about the brain model (auditory cortex, limbic system and ANS), and sound protocols that reinforce positive associations with sound are very important.

Phonophobia:

Person is afraid of a specific sound. Extreme feeling of fear when sound is heard.

ALL THREE CONDITIONS CAN BE PRESENT AT THE SAME TIME
